For three thousand years, Chinese statesmen and generals consulted the Yi Jing before committing to a campaign, an alliance, or a succession β not to predict the future, but to weigh the forces in play and judge the timing of a move. That same instinct persists today: business leaders, negotiators, and investors still use it to pressure-test major decisions, reading the dynamics of a situation before they act. At its heart, the Yi Jing maps sixty-four types of situations β the recurring patterns of human affairs β each offering a way to understand where you stand and how to act wisely within it.
Across the centuries, it has drawn the attention of serious Western minds. Around 1700, Leibniz saw in its structure the same binary logic of ones and zeros he was developing in mathematics β the logic that now underpins every computer. Two centuries later, Carl Jung wrote the foreword to the Wilhelm translation that brought the Yi Jing to the West, treating it as a tool for understanding the unconscious, and linked it to his concept of synchronicity.
It is not fortune-telling. It is a structured way of reading a situation β its strengths and weaknesses, its forces, its underlying dynamic. Where ordinary analysis maps what is, the Yi Jing reads what is changing, and where the change is heading β a skill that has not aged, perhaps least of all now, in a world moving faster than our analysis can follow.
Learning outcomes
This is a practical course. You leave with a solid foundation β able to understand how the Yi Jing works and to begin using it, not just describe it. Often the hardest part of a decision isn't finding the answer but asking the right question β and that is among the first things you'll learn. By the end of the two days, you'll be able to:
Read a situation through the lens of change
recognise the forces at play and the direction they're tending, beyond what surface analysis shows.
Learn the art of asking the right question
often the hardest part of any decision; a clear question is most of the answer.
Consult the Yi Jing with method and rigour
a disciplined, systematic analysis you can trust and repeat.
Devise a concrete plan of action
turn a reading into clear, decisive steps for your actual situation.
Sense timing
know not just what to do, but when the moment is right.
You won't leave a master β that takes years. You'll leave with a real working foundation: enough to use it yourself, for your own decisions, with confidence.
Content
Two days, building from the foundations to a complete working method.
Day 1 β The foundations
The core ideas the whole system rests on, and your first complete reading by the end of the day.
Covered:Yin and Yang Β· the three layers of the universe (heaven, earth, man) Β· the Five Elements Β· the art of asking the right question Β· how a reading is constructed Β· a first case study.
Day 2 β Reading change
The deeper structure, and the technique that gives the Yi Jing its name β reading not just a situation, but how it's changing.
Covered:the eight trigrams and King Wen's arrangement Β· how trigrams combine into a hexagram Β· the roles within each line Β· the technique of changing lines Β· how one situation transforms into the next Β· the sixty-four hexagrams, each a typical life situation Β· worked case studies.
Throughout, the emphasis is on practice. You'll work with real questions β your own included β so that by the end, the method is something you've done, not just heard about.

An important note on what comes next
Module 1 gives you a genuine foundation β but the Yi Jing is deep, and it cannot be learned in two days. Mistaking an introduction for real competency is, at best, unrealistic; with a system this consequential, it can be harmful (from experience).
For this reason, Module 1 is the entry point to continued study, not a standalone course. Those who take it commit to join the ongoing Guang Dao programme taught by my teacher β one or two sessions a month, at your choice, over a minimum of six months. The programme is CHF 70 per month, or CHF 50 per month if paid by the semester.
This is how the Yi Jing is properly learned: consistently, and under experienced guidance.
